Rallies to demand action after Senate report
November 24, 2009
Equal rights campaigners around the nation are preparing for a National Day of Action this Saturday 28 November, in response to a Senate report due this week on marriage equality.
The rallies will add to the pressure already on the Rudd Government to remove discrimination from the Marriage Act (Cth). The rallies will launch a "National Year of Action" for marriage equality, for 2010.
"The Senate inquiry into marriage equality is due to release its report this Thursday 26 November, and whatever it decides, we will be ready to respond," said John Kloprogge, spokesperson for Equal Love Canberra.
"The momentum has been rapidly building towards this day, our National Day of Action for marriage equality, where we expect the strongest statement yet from those who support equality," Kloprogge continued.
Farida Iqbal, of Equal Love Canberra, said 2010 was a crucial year.
"The year 2010 has been earmarked the National Year of Action for marriage equality, because the momentum for change is now unstoppable. We will take advantage of an election year to demand and end to discrimination and ensure we are not forgotten by the major parties," Iqbal said.
"There is simply no reason for th Rudd Government to maintain its opposition to marriage equality. Equal love deserves equal rights, and a 60 percent majority of Australians want the law to reflect this," Iqbal concluded.
