ALP must adopt a binding vote on marriage equality
Marriage equality supporters are coming from around the country to rally outside the ALP National Conference this Saturday. Frustrated by the slow pace of change, protesters will be calling on the party to adopt a binding vote on marriage equality.
Convener of Equal Love Victoria, Ali Hogg:
“It’s time for Labor to get serious about equal rights and adopt a binding vote. It’s an insult to LGBTI people that our rights are an optional extra for Labor politicians, while they are expected to vote in line with party policy in all other areas.”
In relation to international developments, Hogg continues:
“The recent victories in Ireland and the US just highlight how behind Australia is on this issue. We know Abbott is hostile to LGBTI rights, and it certainly doesn’t help that the Labor party is also seen to be dragging
Marriage equality supporters will be gathering from 1pm to demonstrate to attending politicians and party faithful that there is overwhelming public support for equality, and that civil rights are not a matter of conscience but one of principle.
